PARKLAND: H48" W48" D6" WOOD, PAINT, FORMED STEEL 2019
A work about culture, a comparison of two separate times. One a tactical approach needed in a position of danger where time is precious, the other, a social approach where time is on our side.
I feel at some point the responsibility of education shifted from a whole approach to educate children, to simply the education of academics only. This piece is composed of a sculpted steel form, made to look like a pool toy, with an inflatable cap on the barrel end. This represents a childlike gun and is portrayed this way to set the stage of the subject. The painted wood panel is a view of a chalkboard with a script, floating above the chalkboard the steel form is engraved with a similar chalkboard script. Each of these scrips relates to the comparison of the time mentioned earlier. The background script on the wood panel depicts sentences meant to build a connection between students or correct behavior, deeper in the background are past lessons that have been erased. The inscriptions carved on the surface of the steel form speaks more tactical sentences, applying to a more urgent time. This work explores the Psychological view of school violence.
